After intravenous administration of the contrast agent ICG, Rheumascan in the healthy typically visualizes the fingertips first. Shortly thereafter, the contrast agent is distributed all over the other parts of the hands.
A short-run signal enhancement in the area of healthy joints of fingers and hands is a normal appearance. Usually joints appear in the order of finger tip – distal interphalangeal joints – proximal interphalangeal joints – metacarpal joints – carpus. Areas of active disease would appear as prolonged fluorescence enhancement. In addition, this striking signal is often visible earlier compared to signals in healthy regions.
